Three Takeaways From The Cleveland Browns after Week 5

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns are a playoff contender

The Cleveland Browns came into week five on a three-game win streak and a 3-1 record. Despite their stellar record, many NFL fans believed the Browns record was due to their easy schedule. The Browns first three wins came against teams with a combined record of 3-8-1. The Cleveland Browns proved to their doubters wrong with a 32-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. This Cleveland Browns team is different. They are no longer the laughing stock of the NFL. The 2020 Cleveland Browns are the real deal. Cleveland’s exceptional play through five games has put them in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

Browns offensive comes up big on third down

Cleveland’s offense went 10-17 on third down in Sunday’s victory of the Indianapolis Colts. Converting first downs on third down, led the Browns to have long and time-consuming drives for the Browns. The Browns had possession of the ball for almost ten more minutes than Colts. This kept the Colts defense out on the field, getting fatigued. While the Browns defense was able to stay fresh and energized all game. The biggest play of the game came on third down. With just 2:27 left, the Browns faced a third and nine. Cleveland was able to convert the first down on a twenty-eight-yard rush by D’Ernest Johnson. Which led to a field goal and extended the Browns lead to nine points with just twenty-five seconds left in the game.

Browns star defensive player Myles Garrett is looking to become the first defensive player to win NFL MVP since Lawrence Taylor did in 1986. In just five games, Myles Garrett has six sacks, fifteen total tackles, and three forced fumbles. Even when Garrett does not record a sack, he is still getting to the quarterback and making plays. Myles Garrett has registered fifteen quarterback pressures in just five games. With eight of his quarterback pressures resulting in turnovers for the Browns. If Myles Garrett can keep playing at the dominant level he has been playing at, he will be a MVP candidate at the end of the season.
