Knee Jerk Patriots Reaction

The New England Patriots fall to the Denver Broncos 18-12. That was just as bad of the football performance these eyes have seen since the first half of Super Bowl 51. The Patriots had one full practice and one walkthrough practice in two weeks. I didn’t expect the offense to be firing on all cylinders, but Newton throwing for only 157 yards with 2 interceptions is unacceptable. The Patriots rushing attack fell flat on its face with the starting quarterback leading the way with 76 yards. The leading rusher that is an actual running back was Damien Harris with 19 yards. It only gets worse. James White leads the way in the receiving yards category with 9 targets, 8 receptions, and 65 yards. With a number of injuries on the offensive line, Newton was sacked 4 times and hit a number of times.

Enough negativity about the offense. The defense deserves more credit than they are getting. Not allowing a touchdown, 2 interceptions, 2 sacks, and not allowing a single touchdown. They did allow 100 rushing yards to Phillip Lindsey, who just returned from IR. Patriots have a tough next couple of games with the 49ers coming to town next week, followed by the Buffalo Bills. If the Patriots can come out of the next two weeks 2-0, they will be back in the hunt for the Lombardi Trophy. Anything less than that it will be time to start Jarrett Stidham and hope to get a top 10 draft pick and draft the quarterback of the future. A little silver lining as Josh Uche and David Andrews are allowed to return from IR if healthy enough. Uche is a promising young rookie out of Michigan who can play inside and outside linebacker as well as cover a tight end if need be. Andrews is the more important of the two because he brings stability to the offensive line. If neither come off IR this week before Sunday’s game against the 49ers, then their injuries might be a little more serious than previously expected.
