Aggie Senior Quarterback Kellen Mond entered the game on Saturday night as Texas A&M’s leader in total career yards. In this matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks, Mond had another record in his sights. Just three touchdowns behind in all-time school passing touchdowns, Kellen Mond looked to set a new career mark. That record came with six minutes and fifty-five seconds left in the third quarter on a 52-yard throw to Aggie third-string running back Devon Achane for Mond’s fourth touchdown toss on the evening.
Kellen Mond
Kellen Mond now holds Texas A&M records for career passing yards, total yards, passing touchdowns, and completions. The Senior QB added to those records going 16-for-26 for 224 yards and four touchdowns while also adding another TD on the ground.
No Aggie receiver had over 4 receptions on the day as Mond spread the ball well across the field. Ainias Smith continues to be a threat in the passing game as he caught his 5th receiving touchdown from Mond for the first touchdown of the game. The next two were to Jalen Wydermyer off of a 15 and 7-yard grab to close out the half.
The Aggie Running Game
The Aggie running game continues to be a season highlight as they were again able to move the ball down the field with ease. Isaiah Spiller adds to an already impressive season with 131 yards on 18 carries. Coming off a strong game against Arkansas, Devon Achane became another threat for the Aggie offense and saw increased reps with 13 carries for 65 yards and a rushing touchdown to go with his 52-yard touchdown catch. This adds another ground threat to the A&M backfield of Isaiah Spiller and Ainias Smith.
Aggie Defense
While the Aggie offense continued to roll, the Texas A&M defense played a near-perfect game and pitched a shutout for three and a half quarters, leading the team to a 48-3 victory over the Gamecocks. The A&M defense also forced two takeaways with both Leon O’Neal Jr. and Keldrick Carper coming up with an interception. The Aggie defense has shown flashes this season, especially since the Florida game even in games they gave up more scores the Aggie lead never felt threatened. A&M hopes to keep building on their play for a possible SEC Championship game or for their hopeful College Football Playoff appearance.
The Aggies next game is in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers 11/14 as they continue to state their claim for College Football playoff contention. The 7th ranked team in the country has a number of offensive weapons that they seem to add to each week, multiple threats in the running game, and now a defense that is playing hot. If they can keep this level of play Kellen Mond and the Texas A&M Aggies could make it to their first College Football Playoff after sitting on the brink before losing games in previous years.
