It has been a wild season in college football, which was played in the middle of a pandemic that has caused many disruptions, postponements, and cancellations, but we weathered the storm and, against all odds, finished the season. With the bowl games set and the college football playoff teams officially selected, it’s time to look at the end-of-the-year awards, which include the Heisman Trophy. My pick for the Heisman is Mac Jones.
In his first full season as the starting quarterback at Alabama, Mac Jones led the Crimson Tide to an 11-0 season, including their monster win against Florida in the SEC Championship Game. Mac Jones finished the year second in the nation for passing yards and touchdown passes with 3,739 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. It’s true that Florida’s QB Kyle Trask had more passing yards and touchdowns, but the Crimson Tide had the most complete offense in the nation with Najee Harris and Devonta Smith at Jones’ disposal, both of whom put together Heisman-caliber seasons of their own. Jones’ ability to spread the ball around makes him a better play-caller than Trask, which should give him an edge in the Heisman race. Another tiebreaker for Jones over Trask came down to his ability to win big games like the SEC Championship Game. In the aforementioned championship game, Jones threw for 418 yards and 5 touchdowns with a 76.7% completion rate, compared to his rival Trask, who threw for 408 yards and 3 touchdowns with a 65% completion rate. Quite simply, the breakdown between Mac Jones and Kyle Trask is Jones being the most complete QB and Trask being statistically the best QB.
The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding college player of the year. The most outstanding player should also be the most complete player, and if that’s the case, then Mac Jones is your winner.
Heisman finalists will be announced on December 24th, and the winner will be announced on January 5th.
