What other way to break in the New Year than some college football? We watched many blowouts in prior bowl games with star players opting out, but when it comes to the final four, all the players want to show what they can do on the biggest stage of the year. There was controversy with the number three seed in the country in Ohio State. Many talking heads, including Clemson coach Dabo Swinney ranking them 11th in the nation. Ohio State has only played six games this season, and many thought they were undeserving of a spot in the playoffs.
1 Alabama vs. #4 Notre Dame:
Notre Dame got punched in the mouth in the first quarter going down 14-0 just as quickly as the game started. Bama is a different breed when it comes to defense. They are not afraid of their defense to lead the team. However, Mac Jones would not be denied. When your offense has two Heisman finalists and could potentially have a third, it is hard to keep them on lock. Heisman favorite Devonta Smith snagged 7 receptions on 8 targets for a cool 130 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Najee Harris is just another great back to come out of Bama, who had 15 carries for 125 yards. Ian Book struggled to really get into a rhythm, going 27/38 and 229 yards, no touchdowns, and 1 interception. Alabama cruised to a 31-14 victory to continue the losing tradition for Notre Dame on New Year’s Six Bowl games dating back to 1994.
2 Clemson vs. #3 Ohio State:
This was the game of all games. Everyone knew Notre Dame didn’t stand a chance vs. Bama, but no one knew what was going to happen in this game. Ohio State loss last year against Clemson and was looking for revenge. This game also featured two of the best quarterback prospects in years. Everyone’s eyes were on Trevor Lawrence, and he did not disappoint. Lawrence went 33/48 for 400 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Ohio State’s defense stepped up big time by limiting Lawrence’s running ability. Justin Fields looked like the first overall pick in this upcoming draft. Fields threw 22/28, 385 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Fields took a huge shot to the midsection on a run and was out for only one play. It will be interesting to see how he is feeling for the championship game. The 49-28 loss for Clemson ends a historic college career for Trevor Lawrence.
