Head coach Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears struck gold on Sunday as five-star recruit Keyonte George made his commitment to the program. The 6-foot-5 guard chose Baylor over the likes of Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Texas.
“Coach Drew is one of the most caring guys I’ve ever met,” said George. “He cares for his players, his coaching staff, and everyone around the program. He just makes you feel like family.”
Trailing only UCLA commit Amari Bailey, George is the No. 2 ranked player in the country, according to both ESPN and 247 Sports. He’s now the second-highest ranked prospect to ever commit to Baylor and will join four-star point guard Dillon Hunter in Baylor’s 2022 class.
After averaging 24.8 points per game during the high school season, George has been regarded as arguably the best scorer in the class of 2022. The best word to describe his game would be “smooth”.
He’s a three-level scorer that creates his offense off the bounce and plays with a ton of poise in almost any offensive situation he’s put in. Similar to how 2021 draft picks Davion Mitchell and Jared butler were used, George should see high usage in pick and roll sets under coach Drew. His sound decision-making, shot-making ability, and accuracy from three-point range make him a threat coming off screens with the ball in his hands.
“I felt like Baylor was the best fit for me as a scoring guard,” George said. “They were already a winning culture and their playing style helped with my decision, but them winning it all didn’t play a part in it. It was mostly the relationship with Coach Drew and their play style. Their plan is to develop me and make me the best version of myself, help my team win, and hopefully get to the next level.”
At this stage, George certainly isn’t an elite defender as more will be desired from him on that side of the ball at the collegiate level, but he’s capable of developing into a solid defender. He should be well on his way to becoming a future lottery pick with Baylor’s track record of guard development.
