The Mets and Nationals faced off on Thursday in a double header. After a rain delay the night before Marcus Stroman made the start for the New York Mets. Stroman held Washington scoreless through 5 and a third inning. The Stro Show was lights out in Thursday’s day game only allowing one run on three hits.
Stroman benefitted from a three-run homerun off the bat of Brandon Nimmo in the second inning. Nimmo also went onto have another RBI in the fourth, tying his career high of 4 RBI’s in a game.
Brandon Nimmo who missed a significant amount of time this season due to injury has had a hot bat as of late.
“He’s been swinging the bat like that all season now,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “He’s been clutch for us. He got all our runs in. He’s on the fastball. That’s what I like the most.”
Stroman started the sixth inning off with a walk against Riley Adams. Andrew Stevenson then singled as a pinch hitter before a Victor Robles double brought in Adams. Marcus Stroman was removed from the game after striking out Alcides Escobar. Once Aaron Loup took the mound and loaded the bases he was bailed out by a double-play groundout off the bat of Josh Bell.
The Mets were then held scoreless and the trumpets played as their closer Edwin Diaz took the mound in the 7th. Diaz pitched an easy scoreless inning earning his 25th save of the season.
Trevor Williams Debut
The second game of the double-header marked the debut of Trevor Williams. Williams, was acquired from the Cubs in the deal that brought Javier Baez to New York. Williams became the 18th different starter for the Mets this season. The newly acquired right hander was certainly impressive through four innings. In the fifth with a two run lead Williams allowed his first run. He was relieved by Seth Lugo, who held the Nats scoreless in one and a third innings work.
The Mets extended their lead with a two-run shot from shortstop Jonathan Villar. The run gave New York a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Trevor May was given the save attempt after Edwin Diaz got the save in game one. The Mets quickly got into trouble with May on the mound and their lead quickly disappeared after a wild pitch from May’s replacement Jeurys Familia which a Andrew Stevenson’s two-out, two-run single later tied it.
However, just as quick their lead was lost it was regained with a walk-off home run by Pete Alonso. Alonso celebrated the knock by tossing his helmet into the sky and being mobbed by his teammates. Citi Field went crazy after 5 hours of baseball and Pete Alonso hit his fourth career game winning hit.
The Mets hope to carry the momentum from today as they push their way back into the playoff picture. With pitching like was seen today, as well as hot bats there is reason to have hope as a Mets fan.
