David Backes Signs One-Day Contract To Retire With St. Louis Blues

Brad Rempel/USA Today Sports

David Backes is finishing up where he started.

The 37-year old signed a one-day contract with the Blues so he could retire in St. Louis.

“And now we are here, my NHL chapter has concluded,” Backes wrote on the Blues website. “The game got faster and younger and I haven’t been associated with either of those adjectives in a long time.”

A fan favorite in St. Louis, Backes spent the first 10 years of his 15 year career in St. Louis. In that span, he scored 206 points over 727 games, while also having 254 assists and and plus/minus of 65.

He never won a Stanley Cup, but he was on the other side when the Blues won in 2019 over the Bruins.

Backes left St. Louis for Boston after the 2015-16 season.

Backes finished his final season with 3 goals and one assist over just 15 games with the Anaheim Ducks. He had a plus/minus of -4.

But that doesn’t matter to Blues fans, nor does it tarnish what was a great career.

Backes is loved in St. Louis, and he’ll always be. Now, he wraps up his storied career right where it all began.
