Dalton vs. Fields: Does the Rookie QB Have What it Takes?

via NFL.com

It’s a tale as old as time, the old reliable vs. the new guy. A consistent, older, more knowledgeable player vs the young stud who is hungry to play. Andy Dalton vs. Justin Fields, who deserves the starting spot?

With Dalton’s injury on Sunday, it looks like it may be showtime for Fields. Dalton was sacked by D.J. Reader on the Bengals and limped off the field at the end of the second half of last Sunday’s game. It is clear at this point that Dalton did not tear any ligaments in his leg, but the severity of the injury is unclear. As he recovers, the Bears continue to prepare Fields for their next game on September 26th vs. the Browns.

Fields struggled a bit getting his pass game going against the Bengals as he completed 6 passes on 13 attempts, 60 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Dalton on the other hand, threw 9 completions for 11 attempts, 56 yards, 1 touchdown, 0 interceptions. These stats seem a little disheartening for Fields, but the Chicago fans still have hope for him as the Bears won 20-17.

However, Fields is a rookie. He needs time, and an opportunity, to develop as a player. Giving him the starting position, even if just for one game, may be the boost of confidence he needs to become a better player. Chicago fans seem to believe this and continuously push for Fields to start over Dalton.

Shane Lievens, a Chicago native and lifelong Bears fan said, “You have to give the keys to Fields no matter what. During the Bengals game he was thrown to the wolves with a game plan not meant for him. He should finally get some practice with the starters this week so we should truly see what he’s made of on Sunday.”

This unwavering support for Fields over Dalton by Chicago fans and even those who work for the team demonstrates the need for Dalton to sit the bench, even if he is ready for Sunday’s game.

Justin Fields demonstrates the grit that Andy Dalton lacks. He commands the offense in ways Dalton cannot. Fields leaves it all on the field as he is not afraid to run the ball or attack the defense. Not only this, but his game play is entertaining because of his unpredictability, something that will give the Bears an edge against opposing teams as many others know how Dalton plays. Most importantly, Justin Fields has fun when he plays. He shows all the fans what football is all about.
