On Saturday, we received some breaking news that the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady, was going to retire. Then about an hour later, we heard from his father that those rumors were false and that Brady had not made a decision yet.
Of course, Adam Schefter and other NFL reporters from ESPN continued to report that retirement is likely in Brady’s case. But the Associated Press reported that two sources familiar with the details said that Brady hasn’t made up his mind yet.
So with rumors flying everywhere from multiple sides, who do we believe? Is this it for Tom Brady? Has the GOAT finally decided to call it quits? I guess only time will tell.
To be fair, there have been rumors about Brady retiring for years now. Each time, Brady has come out and said that the rumors are false. The difference now is that the rumors are coming from places such as ESPN and Bleacher Report. Does this mean he’s retiring?
If it does, then Brady’s legacy already speaks for itself. Whether you like it or not, he is the GOAT. The man has been selected to the Pro-Bowl 15 times, won seven Super Bowls, been named Super Bowl MVP five times, has been the league MVP three times, and so much more. There really is no debating who the greatest quarterback of all time is. As much as people want to try and find somebody else, it just isn’t possible. If you’re trying to find someone better than Brady, then you’re wasting your time.
Over 318 career games since being drafted in 2000, Brady threw for 84,520 yards and 624 touchdowns, while having an Approximate Value of 316 and a Completion Percentage of 64.2. He took the Patriots from being a sub .500 team to a dynasty. The Belichik-Brady tandem will live on forever in Patriots history.
20 years later, Brady did the same thing for the Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl in just his first year as Bucs quarterback, further cementing him as the greatest quarterback the game of football has ever seen.
So even if this is it for Brady, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find someone who can even come close to TB12’s legacy. The longevity of his career and his accolades are comparable to nobody in NFL history.
But there’s always a chance that this won’t be it for Brady. It could be yet another one of those scenarios where Brady comes out and says he isn’t retiring, despite having hinted at it on a sports podcast, in which case he’ll continue to grow his legacy and further cement himself as the GOAT.
There almost certainly will never be a quarterback that comes anywhere close to Brady, whether he retires or not. Whether we like it or not, we’ve witnessed greatness in perhaps its purest form.
