The BYU Cougars had another impressive outing with their 48-7 victory over the Troy Trojans. While this is the best the Cougars have looked in recent memory, Troy is one of their toughest opponents in a 2020 season shaken up by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As an Independent, BYU had to scramble to find opponents to make this season possible. The Trojans were one of the last teams added to their 2020 schedule that consists of opponents like Texas State, Northern Alabama, Houston, and more.

The Cougar offense put on a show again Saturday night. Zach Wilson added another 392 passing yards in a career-high night for passing yardage. The Junior quarterback now has passed for 624 yards with a nearly 80% completion percentage. The dual-threat quarterback also scored two touchdowns rushing and has been connecting early and often with BYU receivers.

“As a quarterback, I can honestly say a quarterback is always as good as the guys around him,” Wilson said. “I’m fortunate to have a great 10 guys that rally around me. I can make the easy play and they can make it a big play.”

On Saturday, Wilson had a good amount of talent surrounding him. Two of the receivers that benefitted off this connection were Gunner Romney and Dax Milne, who both had career days. Milne had a career-high in both catches and yards with 140 yards receiving on 7 catches. Gunner Romney was over the century mark as well with 138 yards on five receptions. The receivers made excellent targets for Zach Wilson, and it was the first time in five years that two BYU receivers had over 100 yards.

Running Game

Not only have the Cougars had success in the air behind the arm of Zach Wilson, the team has also benefitted from their ground attack. On Saturday, BYU had 4 touchdowns rushing and had another impressive output from Junior running back Lopini Katoa, who had 76 yards on 11 attempts.

“There’s no right answer against us and that’s with any good offense,” running back Lopini Katoa said.

BYU has shown versatility on offense this year and outscored its first two opponents 103-10. Whether it is through the air or on the ground, the Cougars have outgained both teams 1,244 to 330 in total yardage.

Looking ahead at the Cougars schedule, the team should have no trouble with future opponents. One can only wonder what this team could accomplish against better schools.
