Florida Gators: Date With Bama

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

The Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide both clinched their respective divisions on Saturday. Florida beat Tennessee 31-19 while Bama cruised to a 55-17 win against LSU. Florida did everything through the air. Kyle Trask finished the game 35/49 with 433 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. Florida finished the game with only 19 rushing yards, but when your Heisman quarterback has that type of game, you don’t need a ground game. Just when teams think they have Kyle Pitts covered, he goes off for 7 catches and 128 yards. Kadarius Toney finished the game with 8 catches and 108 yards. The Florida Gators receiving core is deeper than just a tight end. They have many different receivers contributing to the air attack.

The SEC Championship will be a test for not only the Gators defense but also the Bama defense. This will be their first real test against a potent offense. A couple of different things will need to happen in order for Florida to get into the College Playoffs. The first thing is they need to beat LSU on Saturday. Nothing will matter if they don’t show up for the game Saturday. What hurts the Gators is the Texas A&M vs. Tennessee was already postponed, and it does not look like A&M will schedule another game for Saturday. With their only loss this season coming against A&M, it looks like the Aggies will finish ahead of the Gators in the rankings.

There are, however, a couple of ways the Gators get into the final four. The first way to get in is to win out the last two games. Beating Bama in the SEC Championship game, even with both teams having one loss, the committee should vote in the Gators to the top four. The second way to get in is for them to win out, AND Clemson loses to Notre Dame in the ACC Championship game. However, I do believe if the Gators win out and the Fighting Irish lose to Clemson, they will be voted out of the top four. Ohio State is currently ranked fourth, but not without a lot of controversy. They are not eligible to play in the Big Ten Championship due to games canceled because of Covid. If their game vs. Michigan is canceled this Saturday, and it looks like it might be, they will need to quickly schedule a game, or they won’t be eligible for the College Playoffs. First things first, Gators need to not take LSU lightly and show up like they deserve to be in the top four.
