Meet Oklahoma Sooners New Quarterback: Spencer Rattler

Spencer Rattler

On June 7, 2017, Spencer Rattler, a young sophomore at the time, would officially commit to Oklahoma University in hopes to one day be named the starting QB for the Sooners. In just two years at Pinnacle High School, in Phoenix, AZ, Rattler had thrown over 5,274 yards with 48 touchdowns. The four-star recruit was destined for success, and all Rattler had to do was wait for his turn.

The Phoenix native would go on to finish his high school career with over 11,000 passing yards and 116 TDs. Before the 2020 football season, Spencer Rattler would be named the starting QB for HC Lincoln Riley’s offense, but with big shoes to fill. With Heisman winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray cementing their legacy in Norman, it’s not easy to come in as a Red-Shirt Freshman and continue the success that past quarterbacks have had.

In Rattler’s first game as a Sooner, #7 had an unbelievable performance leading the Sooners to a 48-0 win in the season opener on Sept. 12 against the Missouri State Bears. The freshman completed 14 of 17 passes while throwing 290 yards and 4 TDs.

While his performance was remarkable; what really stood out was his arm. Rattler has similar throwing mechanics as 2019 Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes, and can clearly sling the ball down the field. The young dual-threat quarterback has wonderful field vision and in his debut performance, looked completely calm.

Although this is a sample size, Rattler has created excitement in Norman again. Since 2017, the Sooners have qualified for the College Football Playoffs three years in a row. It’s been well over 20 years since Oklahoma has won a National Championship, but they are certainly trending in the right direction. Under Lincoln Riley, the sky’s the limit for young Spencer Rattler and where he can take this team.

The new quarterback will have another opportunity to show off his talents against Kansas State on Sept. 26. Many Sooner fans are astonished at his talent and can’t wait to see if Spencer Rattler may be another Heisman in the making.
