The term playing like a girl has new meaning. Playing like a girl means winning the SEC special teams player of the week. Sarah Fuller made an appearance this Saturday in the Vanderbilt vs. Missouri game. Fuller is coming off an SEC Championship with the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team. No need to do a double-take, I said the women’s soccer team. Vandy needed a placekicker for the game because both of their kickers were out. Who else to call up to the roster other than the goalie for the champs? Sarah couldn’t attempt an extra point or field goal because they got shut out 41-0. Knowing they were most likely not going to score in the second half, the head coach made a decision the country was rooting for. He sent out Fuller to squib a kick to the right side of the field, and she nailed it perfectly. With no flags on the play, Fuller became the first woman to play in a Power 5 conference game. She has plans to continue her journey with the team for the remaining two games of the season. Hopefully, with a chance to show off her leg strength.
With all good things, there must be bad, and there was a lot of bad. Comments on the video and pictures of Fuller in uniform were met by the online community. Unfortunately, many hateful comments were posted about her and the team. However, kickers in the NFL and former football players showed nothing but support. The coaching staff couldn’t have been happier for Sarah. Fuller responded to the hate by posting a video of her playing soccer and taking a free-kick from the top of her own penalty box and the ball ending up in the opponent’s penalty box to give her an assist. Sarah Fuller played like a girl this weekend, and her playing like a girl will pave the way for other female athletes. I hope to see her on the field this Saturday to quiet all the people hating on her for something they would never be able to do.
