This time last year #2 LSU was playing #4 Georgia for the SEC Championship. They would go on to win the game and earn the #1 seed heading into the 2019 College Football Playoffs. Now, fast forward to this year, and getting a win over #6 Florida seems to be the most exciting thing to happen to them all season. With just over two minutes to go in the game, Florida player Marco Wilson received a personal foul penalty for throwing LSU tight end Kole Taylor’s shoe 20 yards downfield after a stop that would’ve given Florida the ball back. LSU’s drive was kept alive and resulted in a 57-yard field goal for the win.
Making his first career start, The Tigers put in freshman quarterback Max Johnson, and he didn’t disappoint. Completing 21 of his 36 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns for his best showing yet. Now, this doesn’t take away the fact that the Tiger’s lack of depth was still more than noticeable. They were without their leading pass catcher Terrace Marshall Jr. and starting tight end Arik Gilbert who both opted out in recent weeks. According to The Advocate, this season alone, they’ve lost 18 scholarship players, seven players opted out of the season, six transferred to other schools, and three were arrested or suspended.
The argument for Kyle Trask as the Heisman favorite could drastically change after his lackluster performance on Saturday. Trask threw a pick-six, had a red zone interception, and fumbled late in the first half, which ultimately contributed to his team’s sub-par performance against the struggling Tigers. Head Coach Dan Mullen solely blamed his offense’s turnovers and the inability to score in the red zone. After the game, Mullen seemed to make a dig at Ohio State, stating, “I know we’ve played ten games. So I guess the best thing to do would have been to play less games because you seem to get rewarded for not playing this year in college football.” The Gators will look for an upset when they face the #1 Crimson Tide this coming weekend in the SEC Championship.
