Week At A Glance: Boston Sports Edition

With both basketball and hockey in full swing it’s time to look at how the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics stack up against their opponents.  The Celtics dealt with covid which had them cancel multiple games.  The Bruins couldn’t seem to find the net in regulation.  The Boston Red Sox finally woke up and spent some of their money but not enough to make them contenders for even a wild card position.  Bruins and Celtics look to stay hot and continue their climb to be champions once again.

Red Sox

Well, it looks like someone finally woke up Chaim Bloom from hibernation, and they finally are not just interested in players but actually acting on it. The Red Sox signed Kike Hernandez, who is a great depth player. As good as he is, the Red Sox first option was lost to the Yankees with the re-signing of DJ Lemahieu. That is all good and well, but last time I checked Kike doesn’t help with the pitching situation. The interest kings of baseball decided to step up their game and sign starting pitcher Garrett Richards. If Chris Sale isn’t fully ready to come back from surgery Richards helps the rotation no have to throw out a bullpen game. The Sox also re-signed Martin Perez. With all that happening, no one really saw what happened today coming; the Red Sox and Yankees completed a trade for reliever Adam Ottavino. The Red Sox steal Ottavino from the Yankees in a deal that includes right-handed pitcher Frank German. The Red Sox will either be sending cash consideration or a player to be named later. It looks like the Sox finally woke up and opened up their pockets. They need to make a couple more splashes in the market before I see them contending for anything this upcoming season.

The Bruins started out this season without scoring a 5 on 5 goal through the first three games of the season. They opened up with a shootout win and an overtime loss on back to backs with the New Jersey Devils. Then it got worse, getting shut out by the New York Islanders 1-0. Bruins goalies were standing on their heads just to get no help from their offense. What looked like a throwaway game versus the Flyers being down 2-0 going into the third, the Bruins rallied and netted 4 goals to force overtime. They would gain the extra point in a shootout win. After that thrilling victory, the Bruins figured out that scoring was fun! They routed the Flyers 6-1 to pick up their third victory of the season. Their next four games are going to test who they are as a team, competing in a back to back versus the Penguins and Capitals. David Pastrnak has been skating for the last couple of weeks but finally got rid of his non-contact maroon jersey. The Bruins sit only 2 points behind the Capitals for first in their division.

After dominating the Magic 124-97 coming back from their hiatus of covid players, the Celtics looked like they were about to slip. They got trounced by the New York Knicks 105-75 and then dropped two straight to the 76ers 117-109 and 122-110. What is the best way to get out of a slump? It is to face the Cleveland Cavaliers. Jaylen Brown didn’t crack 20 minutes played and still dropped 33 points on their heads. Kemba Walker helped out with scoring 21, as he looks to get back into game form. Carson Edwards finally gets his time to shine, and he showed up and showed out. Shooting 7/12 and finishing with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Thompson and Theis helped in different ways, Thompson had 12 rebounds, and Theis finished with 17 points. Tatum returns to the court after clearing covid protocol while Kemba will rest against the Bulls. Big game Saturday against the Lakers. Hopefully, the Celtics are full go, which will be a good gauge on how the season will go. The Boston Celtics sit two games back from the 76ers for first place in the conference.
