Alright, it’s Sunday night, and the Bears are down against the Packers. It’s the fourth quarter with only two minutes left to still win the game, Trubisky channels the strength of Jay Cutler to lead the Bears past the Packers in one last game-winning drive. The Bears season is alive, and Trubisky continues to prove that he should never have been sat for Foles. Finally, in the playoffs, once again, Trubisky does all that he needs to, what we’ve come to expect from this imaginary season. Then, outta nowhere, Chris Conte’s blown coverage on 4th & 1 to get the Bears kicked out of the playoffs.
If it’s not one thing, it’s the other with the Chicago Bears. Fans of the franchise are all too familiar with the unique ways in which the team decide to crush their dreams. Many create imaginary scenarios in their head of a great season playing out, but none can imagine the ridiculous ways the Bears crush those hopes. With that in mind, it could only be digressed that Chicago fans would grow sour of their quarterbacks quickly. Year after year, Bears fans are faced being in the shadow of the Packers quarterbacks, first Favre, now Rodgers. Their one and only hope in making playoffs is through the Packers. Chicago looks within their division each time and wonders why is it that our quarterback can’t perform at that level? New addition Mitchell Trubisky quickly overstayed his welcome in the eyes of many, and that is again due to Aaron Rodgers.
Trubisky, the second overall pick in a draft that had Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson on the board, had fans hopes running high in Chicago. The two respective quarterbacks, especially Mahomes, set their teams up in great spots, Mahomes already with a championship. You then add the fact that the Bears continue to struggle against the Packers because of Rodgers stellar play, and it creates a quick distrust of Trubisky. All these players are doing things at lightning speed that kill the patience Bears fans have for #10. The front office knows this, and so they get Nick Foles now to mend a quarterback wound that has been decades in the making. But why? Now said and done, Trubisky has gone 3-0 this season while Foles has gone 2-5. Make no mistake; the decision to start Foles after the bad pass thrown by Trubisky is one that had the fans in mind. The Bears know they finally have a “monsters of the midway” defense again, and they want to start winning games now. Foles was able to be thrown into the Eagles situation and get a Superbowl, so why can’t he do that for the Bears? Well, as it shows (and a cliche statement to make), football is not just a one position player game.
Whether it’s Foles, Trubisky, or Cutler, it’s been the same song and dance for the Bears at quarterback. Bears fans see what other quarterbacks are doing in the league (especially next door in their division) and turn their back on the QB. Now that the front office and coach listened to the impatience of Bears fans over Trubisky, they pushed a 3-0 record to 5-5. This just makes things worse on Trubisky as it shows his front office doesn’t believe in him, and it takes away time he could have used to continue to develop his skills. Now that the Foles experiment didn’t work (which was never a long term answer anyway), the fans are excited and even looking forward to having Trubisky back. But still, Bears fans are providing themselves with false hopes once again as the answer doesn’t come just by switching the guy throwing the ball.
Perhaps it’s a reflection of Nagy’s insistence to call offensive plays that have everyone scratching their heads. Or the O-line that seems to be taking notes from the days when Cutler had a millisecond to throw the ball. Whatever it is, the quarterback problem in Chicago has kept on going, and Trubisky is the latest in a long line of quarterbacks that Chicago has given up on. Even in instances where the quarterback can’t be blamed, the fans impatience leads them to want someone new to throw the ball. Time and time again, the quarterback in Chicago is public enemy #1. Don’t get me wrong, though, sometimes criticism and frustration are very well-merited to the quarterback’s play. The issue, though, has always lied in the supporting cast of the Bears quarterback. Without a good supporting cast, this cycle will continue to rinse and repeat in Chicago. Who knows, though? Now Trubisky has an opportunity to push the Bears past their all-time rivals. It could be the start of something new in Chicago, yet if this team has taught me anything, it’s to hope for the best and expect the worst. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jay Cutler’s ghost possesses Trubisky’s arm, and he throws picks at the worst possible times. At least that would be more fun than watching Foles boring stay in the pocket offense throwing no more than 20 yards. Maybe the Bears should try again with gun-slingin’ Jay. I wonder what he is up to nowadays.
