Infinite Jets: Dolphin Drubbing

Prior to this week’s comedy show, we saw the news that made us wonder about this embarrassment know as the Jets. Matt Patricia was fired after a terrible two and a half years with the Detroit Lions. With Patricia being fired midseason, we have to wonder why Adam Gase is still coaching the Jets. All indications point towards Gase getting the pink slip sometime soon, the only reason to wait out the season is to assure that the Jets finish 0-16 this season to secure the top pick.

The Dolphins allowed the Jets to take the lead only to give them slight hope

The Jets were the first team to score this Sunday afternoon with a first-quarter field goal. It felt weird, the Jets had taken the lead in a game. While they have been frequently able to grab brief leads throughout this season, an opponent like the Dolphins felt like the last team to allow the Jets any hope. The Dolphins were just coming off an embarrassing loss to the Denver Broncos and looking for all way to humiliate the Jets. Needless, to say, the early field goal would be the highlight of the afternoon in New York.

The second quarter reminded us of who the Jets are

A well-executed drive led by Ryan Fitzpatrick culminated with Mike Gesiki grabbing a touchdown to give the Dolphins the 10-3 lead. It’s easy to say that the drive was impressive but considering the Jets defense has been stripped of any talent whatsoever, scoring should be the norm. You honestly can’t blame Gregg Williams for the job he’s done. When considering the players he has to work with, it’s impressive the Jets haven’t been allowing 40 points every game.

Jason Sanders hit a field goal from 51-yards out, giving Miami a comfortable 13-3 lead. The Jets suddenly had one last chance to put points on the board in the half. They were backed to their goal line yet the unthinkable happened, Sam Darnold drove the offense into field goal range. An 82-yard drive set up a 29-yard chip shot. This made it almost perfect that Darnold’s best drive of the game would result in a missed field goal. The halftime score was 13-3 and for all intents and purposes, the game felt over.

Darnold has been a bad QB this season and even worse in the second half.

Sam Darnold hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in the second half of a game since Week Two. The drought not only continued, but Darnold upped the ante by throwing two interceptions in the half. The first interception is a reminder of why Darnold is either a bust or just had his career destroyed with the circumstances he was put into. Darnold was scrambling to his right and nearly out of bounds when he threw across his body a prayer. Now, the smart thing to do would be to either run out of bounds or throw the ball away, instead, he threw a dangerous pass that was easily intercepted.

This isn’t an anomaly, Darnold throughout his early career has been throwing across his body into tight coverage. While many fans would point to other quarterbacks like Brett Favre and Patrick Mahomes as proof for quarterbacks to make dangerous throws, they neglect to acknowledge a few things about Darnold. One, he doesn’t throw with the same velocity or angle as those quarterbacks, defenders can make plays on Darnold’s passes. Two, those types of quarterbacks always tally the interceptions but also make big plays. Being that Darnold isn’t a big-play quarterback, this dooms his career and the Jets for the season.

The Final Dolphins touchdown was the dagger

After a scoreless third quarter but constant progress from the Dolphins’ offense, a touchdown felt inevitable. The Dolphins took a methodical 4th quarter drive that ate away over three and a half minutes. Fitzpatrick found Adam Shaheen open in a soft part of what appeared to be a Jets zone defense. The touchdown made the score 20-3, it was only a matter of time before the Jets would lose another game. The natural response to this touchdown was Darnold’s second interception on the day which officially gave him more interceptions on the day than touchdowns. The Dolphins took their remaining possession to run out the clock and seal the 20-3 victory.

It’s hard to tell whether this will be Gase’s last game coached with the Jets. The reasonable thing to do would be to fire him since they should have done so a long time ago. The only reason to continue rolling out this clown show is to assure the ability to land Trevor Lawrence. The Jets are close, they just have 5 more losses to go.
