It’s the end of an era in San Francisco.
Yesterday, it was revealed that Buster Posey would be retiring after 12 seasons in the big leagues.
Posey, 34, walks away from the game having been an All-Star seven times, a three-time World Series champ, a Gold Glove Award winner, Comeback player of the year, and an MVP.
Posey played an instrumental role in the Giants success over the past decade. He was first called up to the majors late in the 2009 season. He was then brought up for good in June of 2010, and helped guide the Giants to their first World Series title since 1954.
After missing most of 2011 with a broken leg, he came back strong in 2012, winning the MVP and helping the Giants win their second title in three years. San Francisco would go on to win their third championship in 2014, with Posey once again proving to be a key factor.
Following that run, Posey began to deal with some more injuries and his production dipped. He sat out all of 2020 after opting out due to COVID-19. But he returned to form in 2021, hitting .304 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI’s as the Giants won an MLB-best 107 games.
Posey retires a career .302 hitter with 158 total home runs and 729 RBI’s. That should be enough to put him in the Hall of Fame. He was an icon in the city of San Francisco and will be remembered for his leadership and the success he and the Giants had together.
