Cardinals Activate Miles Mikolas, Place Ryan Helsley on IL

The Cardinals rotation is slowly, but surely, getting healthier.

Today, the team activated right-hander Miles Mikolas from the 60-Day-IL.

Mikolas had been out since May after going down with forearm tightness in his first start since Game 1 of the 2019 NLCS. He had missed all of 2020 after surgery on that same forearm and dealt with a shoulder injury that kept him out until his initial return in May.

Mikolas draws the start tonight for St. Louis as they welcome the Pirates into town. In his lone start this year, Mikolas went four innings against the Cubs while only allowing one run.

The Cardinals can only hope Mikolas’ injury struggles are behind him and that he can contribute on the same level he did in 2018, his first year with the team. That year, he went 18-4 with a 2.83 ERA, and was the team’s ace.

In a corresponding move, Ryan Helsley has been placed on the 10-Day-IL, retroactive to August 17, with a right elbow stress reaction. Helsley is 6-4 with a 4.56 ERA this season, and was last used on August 14 in Kansas City.
