In yesterday’s 9-0 loss to the White Sox in Chicago, Oakland A’s starter Chris Bassitt left the game in the second inning after being struck in the face by a 100.1 MPH line-drive off the bat of Brian Goodwin.

The right-hander immediately dropped to the ground and began to cover his face. As trainers rushed to the pitcher’s aid, Bassitt was visibly bleeding before being carted off the field.

Bassitt was taken directly to Rush University Medical Center following the incident.

After the game, his manager, Bob Melvin provided an update on the AL Wins leader.

“Bass is conscious, he was the entire time,” said Melvin. “We don’t think the eye is a problem at this point. It felt like it was below. He’s got some cuts and used some stitches.”

According to a statement made by the A’s this morning, Bassitt suffered a cheek fracture as a result of the liner to his face that will require surgery, but that his vision was unaffected by the incident.

“An exam of his right eye was normal for vision, and no other damage is currently noted in the eye or the orbital bone,” the statement read. “In addition, a head CT scan revealed no further injury.”

The statement also provided an encouraging update on Bassitt’s condition, saying that he was released from the hospital this morning.

It’s good to see that Bassitt is okay. Any time a pitcher is hit with a comebacker, it’s not a pleasant sight.

The A’s will continue their series with the White Sox tonight, with lefty Cole Irvin making the start against Lance Lynn.
