Former Outfielder Anthony Gose Returns To Big Leagues As Pitcher

For the first time since 2016, Anthony Gose will put on a Major League uniform.

But it won’t be in the same role as it was then.

Gose will be returning to the big leagues as a left-handed pitcher with the Cleveland Indians. He was called up today for the doubleheader against the Royals.

“Anthony’s been a source of dialogue among the front office and coaching staff,” said Indians president Chris Antonetti. “We’ve thought about different opportunities to potentially bring him up at different points along the way.”

Gose was once an outfielder with the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays. He hit .240 with a .656 OPS during his last stay in the majors. He converted to pitching after he didn’t make the Tigers Opening Day roster in 2017.

Gose now has a fastball that averages in the upper 90s. It’s said that he’s even hit 100 mph with it. He went 6-1 with a 3.55 ERA this year in Triple-A.

This is a great story. This guy hasn’t seen any big league action in five years. He was pretty much deemed not good enough to play in the majors. But he stuck with his goals and continued to follow his dreams, making the necessary adjustments to stick around and make his eventual return to the big leagues.

You can’t help but feel good for Gose. We can only speculate on the amount of time he’s put in and the lengths he’s gone to try and salvage his career. Going from being a position player to a pitcher, or vice versa, has to be very challenging, and he’s done something that few have been able to accomplish.
