Although the Mets opening series against the National was postponed this week, the club announced their 26-man roster. The list didn’t have much as far as surprises. Perhaps the biggest name left off the list was Jordan Yamamoto. Yamamoto was in consideration to be a back end starter or long relief option for the Mets. The pitcher was beat out by David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi for the rotation. However, it is likely he will get playing time in the majors in either role later in the season.
Also not listed on New York’s 26-man roster were players on the IL. Seth Lugo, Carlos Carrasco, and Drew Smith all saw their name placed on the 10-day IL. Noah Syndergaard, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, was placed on the 60-day IL Also, on the 60-day IL was Jose Martinez, who tore his meniscus in spring training.
Lugo and Carrasco starting the season on the injured list makes room for a reliever like Miguel Castro. Castro had an very impressive spring training, and looks to be a reliable arm in the Mets pen. Dellin Betances, who had a rough spring also made it onto the opening day roster in lieu of the Mets injuries.
