Coming into the 2021 MLB season a lot of people regarded Mets ace Jacob deGrom as the best pitcher in baseball, and thus far he has lived up to those expectations.
deGrom is coming off a 2020 season where he finished 3rd in the Cy Young voting, after winning the award 2 years in a row in 2018 and 2019. As I am writing this article DeGrom currently holds a 0.31 ERA and a WHIP at 0.552.
The 33-year-old has gone at least 6 innings in all of his 4 starts this year, only allowing 1 ER in all of them combined. His first start was probably his worst, as he went 6 innings, giving up 0 ER and striking out 7. If that is your worst start you are probably doing something right.
He allowed his only earned run in his second start, where he went 8 innings, allowing only that 1 run and striking out 14. He had another 14 strikeout performance in his 3rd start, where he pitched 6 innings of scoreless baseball against the Rockies. His most recent performance was probably his most impressive (as if the first 3 starts weren’t good enough), as he pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out 15.
Even the best pitchers in baseball have bad starts here and there, but that does not seem like the case for Jacob deGrom. For the past 4 years, he has been exceptionally dominant, and even before that he was a really solid pitcher.
At this point I think it would be more of a miracle for deGrom to have a bad start than it would for him to continue the pace he has been on, he just is that good.
