The Nationals fire sale continues.

Just last night, after the Padres reportedly missed out on Max Scherzer, San Diego went and grabbed a solid reliever to strengthen their bullpen in Daniel Hudson.

In exchange, the Padres sent right-hander Mason Thompson and infielder Jordy Barley back to Washington.

Hudson will be remembered in Washington as the man who closed out the 2019 World Series and helped the Nats clinch their first ever title. This year, he’s 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 31 games with Washington.

Daniel Hudson is currently on the COVID IL after a recent outbreak within the Nationals clubhouse. Once he returns, he will greatly strengthen a Padres bullpen that is in need of arms.

“Obviously, we’re getting another winning piece in the back of the bullpen,” Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. “He’s been as good as anybody, honestly, since probably 2019. He’s dominant. He’s got a lot of power to his game. He’s got a lot of experience, won a World Series. Just being able to add another winning, dynamic piece to our bullpen, I think that’s going to help us down the stretch for sure.”

San Diego currently leads the race for the second NL Wild Card spot by five games over the Reds, and sit 5.5 games behind the Giants in the NL West. This puts the Padres in prime position to chase down the NL West crown and take a shot at their first ever World Series championship after reaching the postseason for the first time since 2006 last year.
