Padres Hire Bob Melvin As New Manager

The Padres search for a new manager is complete.

Last night, San Diego hired Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin to fill the vacancy left by the firing of Jayce Tingler. They had recently interviewed Luis Rojas and Mike Shildt.

Melvin had a club option with Oakland for the 2022 season that they picked up, but they gave him permission to interview in San Diego. The Padres will not be sending any sort of compensation back to the A’s.

The Padres started hot in 2021, and looked like the team that would ultimately pin down the second NL Wild Card as they fought it out in the NL West with the Giants and Dodgers. But they began to falter after the trade deadline and ultimately finished 79-83, missing the postseason and leading them to fire Tingler.

Melvin reached the playoffs six times with Oakland and has won the Manager of the Year Award three times, once with the Diamondbacks and twice with the A’s. The Padres hope that he can turn things around and get them back to the postseason.

Now the A’s are searching for a new manager. Melvin had taken them from a sub .500 team to a legitimate playoff contender twice in the past decade. Finding someone to replace him will be a tall task.
