Jazz Deal Miye Oni And Draft Pick To OKC

The Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder came to an agreement on a trade for third-year shooting guard Miye Oni. The transaction was first announced by The Athletic’s Tony Jones and Shams Charania. In the deal, the Jazz send Oni and a 2028 second-round pick to the Thunder.

Trading Oni helps Utah avoid paying the full $1.78 million of his partially guaranteed contract and opens up two roster spots for the Jazz. Dealing the third-year guard rather than waiving him helps Utah save $2.4 million. Had the Jazz outright waved Miye Oni, their tax bill would have been $30.3 million, but by trading Oni, they avoid a dead cap hit, and their cap penalty gets reduced to $27.9 million, as reported by Bobby Marks.

Oklahoma City is expected to waive Miye Oni and clear up a roster spot of their own ahead of February’s trade deadline. They will need to waive a player on their roster prior to the deal being finalized.

For Utah, clearing up a roster spot allows them to sign a 10-day contract or two in the meantime and adds flexibility before next month’s trade deadline.

Soon after the trade announcement, Joe Ingles also became the first player for the Utah Jazz to be entered into the Leagues Health and Safety Protocols. Expect some new faces in a Jazz uniform in the coming weeks.
