The Houston Rockets have been hit hard with the injury bug. This week the team made franchise history with 13 players listed on their injury report. In a rebuilding year, this is giving opportunities to some of the Rockets young and two way players. Perhaps no player is benefitting from the increased playing time than rookie Kenyon Martin Jr.
In the month of May, Martin has seen increased levels of playing time averaging 33 minutes compared to his season average of 22.1. Over the last five games the rookie is averaging 16.4 points per game, nearly double his season average (8.4). Including setting new career highs in scoring each of the last three games (27, 26, 23).
However, Martin production hasn’t stopped there. The forward is also averaging an impressive 8.4 rebounds in the last five games. He has also showed an ability to pass that Rockets fans haven’t seen this season, recording a six assist game, followed by a seven assist night. While the assist numbers have not been consistent for Martin it does suggest a playmaking ability.
KJ Martin
Previously this season KJ has impressed with high-flying dunks that make ESPN’s top plays, and shown flashes here and there. But in the last five games, Martin has proven that he could make a legitimate impact for the Rockets. Having skipped college and being drafted as a bit of a project that Houston believed could contribute with time, KJ has already made great strides.
The Rockets hold the NBA’s worst record, and have been eliminated from playoff contention. The play of Martin and other Rockets young guys have been a glimmering bright spot on an otherwise gloom season. Looking ahead to next season it is unclear what their rotation may be, however, Kenyon Martin Jr. has certainly made a case in this stretch of games that he could be a focal point.
