Knicks Sign Highly Touted Free Agent PG, Luca Vildoza

Luca Vildoza New York Knicks

The New York Knicks are taking advantage of their available salary space and roster spot, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The team has reportedly agreed to a four-year $13.6 million contract with Argentine guard, Luca Vildoza. Vildoza was expected to be one of the most in demand point guards in this summers pending free agency.

The Knicks made the move early, and Vildoza has already negotiated his buyout with Baskonia of the Spanish ACB League. It was reported that the guard had already fielded several offers and the Knicks were able to give him the best contract. According to some reports, the Knicks may have to pay Baskonia $2 million as part of a buyout settlement.

Luca Vildoza is known for his playmaking ability and brings a scoring guard that can also facilitate the basketball. His play earned him MVP honors in the 2020 Spanish ACB finals where he led Baskonia to a championship. The 25-year-old is also a member of the Argentina National Team.

What exactly are the Knicks getting with the signing? An NBA scout said of Luca Vildoza. “He’s tough, hard-nosed. He’s an excellent passer, shooter and was consistent in Baskonia. He has a good feel for the game.”

The timeline for when Vildoza will join the Knicks depends heavily on immigration protocols, which due to the pandemic is more unpredictable than usual. However, once the combo guard clears immigration protocols he is free to join the team, even in the current season. Vildoza will likely take the roster spot created by the expiration of Jared Harper’s 10-day contract.

The Knicks currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. They have been benefitted by the All-Star season of Julius Randle, mid-season trade of Derrick Rose, and the rest of their core. Adding a playmaker like Vildoza could really help the club in postseason play.
