Saturday was the Preseason debut for the New York Jets, as well as their rookie QB Zach Wilson. Wilson’s first appearance in a simulated game at MetLife Stadium last week was one to forget. The rookie threw two interceptions and failed to lead the offense to score more than a field goal. Saturday was Wilson’s chance to make up for making a better first impression. It was also an opportunity to see more of the Jets roster. Read our observations from Preseason week one.
Comfortable Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson looked much more poised in the matchup against the New York Giants. While he didn’t make any plays that will end up in Sportscenter’s top ten, it was a quality appearance. Wilson went 6-for-9 while passing for 69 yards. Most importantly, the first year pro from BYU looked comfortable as was noted by the Jets rookie head coach Robert Saleh. “He looked comfortable, especially on third down. … It was a good first day,” Saleh said.
Wilson stood in well as a pocket quarterback but also was impressive in his ability to move. The ball moved quickly and naturally from his hands, and Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur set him up to succeed.
Wilson To Davis
Another important note from their first game is the growing connection between Wilson and Corey Davis. LaFleur established the connection early calling a Zach Wilson roll out where he would connect with a sure fire 9 yard throw to Davis. Wilson later connected with Davis again showing accuracy and arm strength in a toss to the opposite sideline. The quarterback both noted the quality of the playcalls and on his relationship with Davis. “A great call by Coach LaFleur,” Wilson said. “That connection’s gonna keep growing,” he said of Corey Davis.
The Jets have been missing a clear quarterback and wide receiver duo in their recent years. A budding relationship between their two new stars could be critical to their success this season. Having a reliable wide receiver is also a luxury they hope Wilson takes advantage of.
Hope in the running game
The Jets are employing a running back by numbers style of gameplan where they will look to use each to their strengths. As well as helping them have fresh legs. On Saturday their running backs definitely impressed. Ty Johnson, La’Mical Perine, and Michael Carter each had some nice runs on the evening. Their running back by committee went on to have 80 yards and a touchdown in their 12-7 win.
Sack Lunch
Despite many of their starters resting New York’s defensive line applied a steady amount of pressure. They had 10 hits on the quarterback and five sacks on the day. Rookie Hamilcar Rashed Jr. impressed with 1.5 of their 5 sacks. Perhaps the most important thing to the Jets defense will be the play of their defensive line. Saturday was a great start for the gang in green. The team also got the good news of Quinnen Williams with an eminent return being soon. Look for them to set the town for the New York defense.
