Been waiting all day for Sunday Night! The Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks game was flexed to the night game in Week 7. The undefeated Seahawks were certainly Arizona’s hardest opponent of the season, and a win against them would be huge.
First Half
The Seattle Seahawks had the first go at the ball, and they certainly made the most of it. Tyler Lockett had a phenomenal one-handed grab to open the game and followed it up with a quick touchdown. Early in the first quarter, the Seahawks were up 7-0. The Cardinals’ first possession went three and out. Arizona was missing a key defensive player in Chandler Jones, and their struggle was showing early on. The Seahawks were extremely close to another touchdown. As a matter of fact, Greg Olsen caught one in the endzone but was unable to get both feet in bounds. Seattle settled for a field goal, giving them a 10-0 lead.
The Cardinals were in need of a score in the first quarter. With Kyler Murray at quarterback, that certainly wasn’t impossible. After a 75-yard drive, Murray connected with Hopkins for a touchdown, making the game 10-7 with Seattle still on top. However, Seattle wanted to extend their lead even farther and was able to drive the ball downfield and gain another three points from a field goal, 13-7.
The Cardinals needed a huge play to help them out. Russell Wilson and the Seahawks were in the red zone when Wilson threw a pick to Budda Baker. Baker ran the ball 90 yards but was unable to get in the endzone. The Cardinals offense took over and were not able to score. Kliff Kingsbury wanted his offense to go for it on 4th down, and they were unsuccessful. The score remained 13-7. With the Cardinals decision to not take a field goal, the Seahawks got the ball right back. The Seahawks wasted no time driving the ball down the field for yet another touchdown, imagine that—a score of 20-7 with about 4 minutes remaining in the half.
Just after the two-minute warning, the Cardinals found themselves in the red zone. Kyler Murray connected with Christain Kirk for an Arizona touchdown. With a Zane Gonzalez extra point, the score 20-14. Unfortunately, the Cardinals left too much time on the board because the Seahawks were quickly able to get down field, AGAIN. Another touchdown for Seattle, giving them a 27-14 lead. With only a minute left of play, the Cardinals tried to put more points on the board before the half was up. A 49-yard field goal attempt from Gonzalez was good, and the score was 27-17 going into the half.
Second Half
The third quarter was a slow start and scoreless on both sides of the field. It wasn’t until the Cardinals possession late in the third that finally led to a score. The Cardinals were able to get a touchdown to shorten the Seahawks lead. Only down by a field goal, the score was 27-24, with Seattle still on top.
The second half was certainly not as exciting and thrilling as the first half of the game. However, halfway through the fourth quarter is when the game began to pick up again. The Seahawks had ANOTHER successful touchdown to extend their lead to 10, 34-24, and the Cardinals were struggling both offensively and defensively.
With the odds stacked against them, the Cardinals needed to step up their game. It took about 4 minutes, but the Arizona offense was finally able to drive down the field all the way into the endzone! Now just one possession, 3 point game with a score of 34-31.
For those that thought this was a runaway game for Seattle were mistaken. The Cardinals were able to get in field goal range with 2 seconds left on the game clock. Zane Gonzalez came out to kick a 44-yard field goal to tie the game! Overtime begins with a score of 34-34.
Overtime
Seattle had the ball first and were unable to go down field and score. The Cardinals had their turn and ran the ball down field rather quickly. The Cardinals head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, decided to kick a field goal on 2nd down. A 41-yard attempt for Zane Gonzalez was up and good until it was called back due to the Cardinals taking a time out. It is strange for the offensive team to call the time out during a field goal. It is also rare that a kicker makes a long field goal twice in a row, and wasn’t that the truth. The second kick for Gonzalez was no good, and the Seahawks obtained possession.
The Seahawks had possession once again, and Russell Wilson threw an interception to Isaiah Simmons. The Cardinals didn’t make it super far down the field before the clock was running out. With only 20 seconds on the game clock and a 48-yard field goal attempt to win the game, Zane Gonzalez came back out onto the field to kick the game-winner! The Arizona Cardinals take home a huge W against Seattle with a final 37-34 score. Arizona is the first loss for the Seahawks, and the Cardinals are now 5-2. The Cardinals are off next week on a bye.
