Chicago Fans and Players Agree, Fire Nagy

As the Chicago Bears lost this past weekend their record fell to 3-7, going on a 5 game losing streak. Who is to blame for these losses? Justin Fields? Injuries? The defense? Well, Chicago fans all agree, head coach Matt Nagy is the reason for this rough season.

“Fire Nagy” chants rang through Soldier Field on Sunday, November 21st, as fans were frustrated after losing to the Baltimore Ravens, who were without their starting quarterback, Lamar Jackson. This was an embarrassing loss as Chicago was even back with their starting running back, David Montgomery, who carried the ball 14 times for only 58 yards.

Chicago fans place blame on Nagy for this loss as he seems to have brought bad luck to the team throughout his years as head coach. While he started off strong in 2018 leading the team to an NFC championship, in 2019 he failed to make the playoffs and then in 2020 only lead them to the playoffs because a new number 7 seed was added.

However in 2021, it was clear to see that they were doing decently because of the players, not the coaching staff. Mitchell Tribusky, while highly criticized, proved to be a strong quarterback for that Bears team. Without him and wavering trust in both Fields and Andy Dalton, the team does not know what they are doing.

While fans are clearly fed up, it is even more surprising to hear the players want him out as well. This report comes from a former ESPN reporter, Jordan Schultz, who co-hosts a podcast with Chicago wide receiver Allen Robinson. He sent out a tweet that stated, “An overwhelming number of Bears players want Nagy gone,” which is huge as it means Nagy not only has lost the trust and support of the fans, but the players too.

This development will prove to be interesting as the weeks go on. There are even rumors that this week’s Thanksgiving game will be the last time Matt Nagy is the head coach of the Bears. But as Schultz pointed out later in his tweet, this franchise has not fired a head coach midseason in all of its history. It is now a waiting game to see what Nagy’s future holds.
