The Kansas City Chiefs would completely eradicate the Los Vegas Raiders’ Week 5 confidence in last night’s win. The Raiders’ victory in their previous meetup would be a thing of the past as the AFC leaders reminded the Raiders who’s really on top.
Kansas City was 8-1, coming into Week 11. No matter the Raiders current home-field advantage, the Chiefs had just had time to relax & rejuvenate in lieu of last week’s bye. It wouldn’t help the Raiders that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was also 18-3 following a bye.
With the first possession, the Raiders refused to miss a touchdown opportunity. Quarterback Derek Carr would make a necessary conversion on 3rddown with a deep left pass to tight end Darren Waller for 26 yards. Head coach Jon Gruden wanted to be wise about their revived drive and would take an early timeout.
A motivated Carr would return to the field to connect to wide receiver Nelson Agholor for 29 yards, putting his team into the red zone! After a needed combined 15-yard gain, running back Josh Jacobs would find the goal line for the touchdown. The Raiders would be up 7-0 to start the game.
The Raiders might have felt a spurt of hope but then remembered that Chiefs captain Patrick Mahomes was about to take his place on the field.
Mahomes would use 7 minutes and 24 seconds, 85 yards, and 14 plays to offer a slow but sure response to the Raiders prior TD. Knowing their opponents’ capabilities, the long drive would offer a pins and needles type experience for Las Vegas.
Each time they were able to push Kansas City to 3rddown, Kansas City would come right back with the 1stdown. Agony probably hardly described what the Raiders were feeling. With the Chiefs only needing 7 yards for the touchdown, Gruden would take a timeout at 2nd&. Even after the time-out, the Raiders defense would be nothing but topsy-turvy. The muddled Ravens defense would allow wide receiver Tyreek Hill to merely sashay into the end zone to tie the game 7-7.
With the end of the first quarter quickly approaching, the Raiders would work to find a response. If nowhere else, at least in the offense… Carr would find receiver Hunter Renfrow for 16 yds, to bring his team to the KC 42. With 38 seconds on the clock, Carr wanted to end the 1stquarter with a statement. He would release a 17-yard shotgun to Agholor into the end zone, and the catch was good! Carr was ready to give Mahomes a run for his money.
Mahomes would follow with a couple of deep passes of his own, one down the middle to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, and the other for 21 yards to one of his favorite targets, wide receiver Travis Kelce.
Three incomplete passes would follow but cause little damage as two plays would pick up defensive penalties, creating a Kansas City 1st& goal. Running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire would finish the job and bring the score to 14-14 going into the 2ndquarter.
After a series of no scoring, the Raiders would break up the back to back touchdown game that they and their opponents had created. As a result of an ineffective drive, they would be forced to settle for three with four minutes left in the half.
The field goal would be the final scoring of the half, despite a valiant but ultimately non-aiding interception by Raiders cornerback Trayvon Mullen.
Being down by three seemed to mean very little to Mahomes from his unbothered face as he exited the field. Besides, why would he? He and Reid would leave the half knowing a win was still in sight.
The Chiefs would get the ball to start the second half. In absolutely no rush at all, Chiefs would use all eight minutes and thirty-seven seconds to adjust the scoreboard. Kelce, Hill, and Edwards-Helaire would band together to bring in the final needed yards for the touchdown. Harrison Butker would complete the drive with the kick, and the score adjusted to 21-17.
Las Vegas would use the remaining six minutes on the clock and then some from the 4thquarter to respond. Making the necessary 1stdown pickups and conversions, the Raiders would find themselves 1st& goal at the Kansas City 3.
It would be Waller to be awarded the score, receiving the toss from Carr for the touchdown! The Raiders somehow managed to clinch their lead with a quarter left to play.
On the following drive, a deep right connection to Kelce would both gain 19 yards for Kansas City and get them to the Las Vegas 18. Vegas feeling the pressure, would take the timeout. The timeout would prevent an immediate first down, but not the one that counted. Running back, Le’Veon Bell would close the drive with a 6-yard rush for the touchdown.
Hoping to prevent another scoring opportunity from Kansas City, Las Vegas would take full advantage of their next drive, winding the clock down from 5 minutes to 1:43 left of play. The Raiders had successfully used a needed chunk of the remaining game but needed a touchdown more than ever.
At 3rd& goal at the KC 1, tight end Jason Witten would receive his only and most important catch of the game. In true veteran fashion, Witten would leap for the pie line, both of his hands secured around the ball like a lock.
The touchdown was good, and the Raiders were no doubt thinking, ‘Thank goodness for vets!”
With just under two to play, and the Raiders now up 28-31, things would quickly change.
Mahomes was ready to serve up a platter of watch and learn.
The Chiefs final drive would be centered around one thing and one thing only, Mahomes throwing arm. After a pair of passes to Hill, Mahomes would get a look down the middle to make a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman to convert on 3rd& 1. He’d continue down the middle to connect to Kelce for 15 yards at the Las Vegas 25.
With only 28 seconds remaining on the game clock, a touchdown was needed for the Chiefs to win the game. Mahomes would take a few steps, then go right to draw the defender before releasing a remarkable dart across left field to Kelce. If anyone was going to complete the pass under that amount of pressure, it was Mahomes. Kelce would make the grab in the end zone for the touchdown, bringing the final score to 35-31! Kelce would celebrate by slamming the ball into the ground. He was later found giving a shoulder massage to his head coach on the sidelines.
Chiefs had brought in its 9thwin of the season, while Sin City had gotten a front-row seat of the greatness that is Patrick Mahomes.
