With free agency unofficially beginning today with the start of the legal tampering period, the Jets have made four moves. Let’s take a look and analyze each of the four.
Braxton Berrios
One was bringing back receiver/All-Pro returner Braxton Berrios on a reported 2 year, 12 million dollar contract. Jets fans have been clamoring for his return, and it seemed as though Zach Wilson wanted him back as well. At this price it seems like a no-brainer that Joe Douglas would bring the former Miami Hurricane back. As of now, Berrios is the number three receiver on this roster, but with Jamison Crowder and Keelan Cole likely out the door, the team will be in the market for a receiver in the first two rounds of the draft.
Grade: A
Tevin Coleman
The other re-signing was running back Tevin Coleman for the veteran’s minimum. This move surely does not move the needle that much, but Coleman was a solid rotational back when healthy in 2021. Look for the Jets to add another running back late in the draft or another cheap free option to give some depth and competition behind second year stud Michael Carter.

Laken Tomlinson
The Jets’ most expensive signing today was inking guard Laken Tomlinson from the San Francisco 49ers to a 3 year, 40 million dollar deal. Tomlinson, a former pro bowler, is extremely familiar with LaFleur’s offensive system, and is known for his run-blocking abilities. He should help both Zach Wilson and Michael Carter immensely this season.

CJ Uzomah
Tight end CJ Uzomah was the most recent splash by Douglas, and to say it was much needed is an understatement. After the abysmal tight end play the franchise endured throughout the 2021 season, getting Wilson a big weapon was a top priority. The underrated Bengal will bring athleticism and super bowl experience to this young roster, and for the same contract that Will Dissly received at 3 years $24 million, Uzomah is well worth it.

All in all, the Jets and Joe Douglas had a fantastic first day of free agency. They addressed needs across their offense, signing weapons and protectors for their young quarterback. Their defense still has several holes, but now they have more flexibility to use their draft pick cupboard on that side of the ball.
