Infinite Jets: Spark of Optimism

The Jets were coming off a bye week, which made us wonder. For starters, we wondered if they actually deserved a bye week, this Jets team is so bad they deserve to go 0-17 rather than the simple 0-16. The other wonderment was whether the Jets would come back stronger this week. Considering they were playing the Los Angeles Chargers, there was reason to be hopeful (slightly). If there was any time to grab a win this season, it would be against the Chargers. After this game, every team on the Jets schedule besides the Patriots will have a .500 record or better.

A glimmer of hope followed by it all being lost.

The Jets Looked like they could turn the game into a somewhat competitive one early one. A blocked punt led to a quick score and the five or so Jets fans that still watch this pitiful team thought that they would be the ones in control. When the extra point failed, we were reminded who was playing this game.

Joe Flacco helped set the tone for the weekly reminder that the Jets are the worst team in the NFL. Backed to the goal line, Flacco tossed a careless flat pass that looked eerily similar to one of the worst decisions in NFL history. The pass was an easy pick-6 and the Jets wouldn’t take the lead the rest of the game.

Herbert’s arm carves the Jets defense

Justin Herbert has been a highlight reel this entire season, making great throw after great throw. It was only inevitable that Herbert was going to carve up the Jets depleted defense. After a few miscues from the offense and the special teams, Herbert found a rhythm and started to pick apart the Jets defense. Herbert threw 3 touchdowns on the day but by the end of the first half, the game looked over. Herbert had already thrown 2 touchdowns and led the Chargers to a comfortable 24-6 lead at the half.

Considering that the Jets have only scored one second-half touchdown in the previous four games, the game looked over to most. Joe Flacco was good and could lead an NFL offense, in 2013, not 2020.

Chargers have blown leads this season but not this time

The Chargers aren’t a good team, this a known truth to any football fan. There is a reason that the only teams the Chargers have beaten this season have been the Bengals, Jaguars, and now Jets. They have been known for allowing any team into a game and allowing them to win by one score. In fact, nine of the ten games the Chargers have played in this season have been one-score games and all seven losses were by one score. This speaks volumes about the gap between a team that is bad but also unlucky. Compared to a Jets team that is just bad.

Joe Flacco started to bring back some of the magic with the help of the promising rookie Denzel Mims. The offense did what seemed to be the impossible in the second half. They scored not only once, or twice, but scored three touchdowns in the second half. The Jets hadn’t scored three touchdowns in a second-half since Week One of the 2018 season. In terms of moral victories, they can in theory take this one.

The Jets still lost but covered the spread.

The last time the Jets played, they lost to the Patriots but covered the spread as they were at least touchdown underdogs. The heroics of Joe Flacco allowed the Jets to still lose (which of course is needed for the Jets to grab Trevor Lawrence) but cover the 9.5 points spread they were underdogs with. It’s likely that the only people watching this game were those that bet on it. Considering that the Jets fans have suffered enough and Chargers fans don’t even attend their games when they allow fans. This game had to be watched by only the bettors. At this point, they have to be playing for that fan base. While their own fans should rightfully boycott such an embarrassment, the casual fan can watch this game for the same reasons they watch Thursday Night Football.
