“Corvette, Corvette!” Could that be the sound of wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster to the New York Giants?
The Pittsburg Steelers free agent hinted that if his time were up in the Iron City, that he would have interest in joining the Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders, or the New York Jets. Nobody knows the extent to how serious this conversation was because it did happen while playing Fortnite. However, since he is on the market, anything can happen. At this time, the Steelers have been quiet on where they stand with Juju.
To many, the trade to the New York Jets would probably be the most reasonable. Juju does have a previous relationship with Sam Darnold as that was his former QB at USC. “I played with him, and one of his best techniques was that he was able to throw the ball, make his reads quick, and not afraid to take shots,” Schuster said in an interview at the 2019 Pro-Bowl.
The two could have a chance to reunite. That is, of course, if the Jets are able to make the trade for him while also keeping Darnold. The QB position with the Jets is unknown, but if there’s one thing for certain, the Jets need help at wide receiver, regardless of who they will have throwing the ball. They definitely need someone who can catch it.
This doesn’t rule out the fact that the New York Giants can also acquire him, though. Big Blue is also in need of help at the wide receiver position.
Golden Tate may not be with them for too much longer because he doesn’t appear to be a big playmaker. Part of the reason is because the team doesn’t target him as much. Tate will be 33 by the time the 2021 season starts. Rumors have been circulating that the Giants plan on moving on from him. As a result, it would free up tons of cap space. How true is it? Fans would have to wait and see.
On the other hand, Sterling Shepard is a great playmaker – when he’s not injured. Concussions seem to have his number oh too well.
Finally, Darius Slayton is able to make tremendous plays but fits better as No. 2 receiver. The team is missing a piece to the puzzle, and that is a No. 1 receiver.
Some may argue that Juju is not the type of player that you would consider No.1. His stats speak for themselves. Throughout his tenure with the Steelers, he has 3,726 yards, 308 receptions, and 26 touchdowns. He would definitely be a big help to Daniel Jones.
The final decision would come down to whether the Giants organization would appreciate his behavior being similar to Odell Beckham Jr. The wide receiver turned TikTok star has changed the way people perceive him. With the leadership within the organization, Joe Judge will be able to fix it in no time.
Most recently, Juju has died his hair dark blue. Is it too early to call this a coincidence?
