NFL: Rams Clinch Playoff Spot

via USA TODAY Sports

As a Detroit Lion, Matthew Stafford had lost six starts in a row against his former division rival, Minnesota Vikings. There was redemption this morning at U.S. Bank Stadium, thanks to the support of an intimidating defense and a coach with creative play calling. However, Stafford’s performance fell short of fans’ expectations. He threw three interceptions and a slew of weak passes in his first game against the Vikings in a Rams jersey.

The Rams had very little turnaround time to rest, prepare and travel to Minnesota after their last game was rescheduled to Tuesday. As of Friday, last week, The Rams had 21 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, including Odell Beckham Jr., Jalen Ramsey, and Darrell Henderson Jr. Even with the Rams’ shortened week, the well-rested Vikings could not take advantage of this opportunity.

The Rams managed to win despite their QB’s uninspiring performance. The Vikings were unable to capitalize on his three interceptions. Fortunately, Stafford got help in the form of Brandon Powell’s third quarter, 61-yard punt return for a touchdown, giving the Rams a 20-10 lead. Sony Michel also contributed, in a major way, rushing for 131 yards on 27 carries. As usual, dependable Matt Gay made all field goals.

The Rams managed to lead throughout this contest, but the Vikings kept it close, but as usual, fell short. Today’s 30-23 victory ensured a playoff spot for the Rams while the Viking’s chances dwindled. Now, 11-4 and first in the NFC West, the Rams venture to Baltimore next Sunday to face the Ravens. The Rams’ timing is good, as they can look forward to facing an injured and struggling Ravens team. Having come away with a win in Minnesota, the Rams remain a serious contender with the talent to make it deep into the playoffs.
