Was there ever a doubt the Packers were losing this game to the Texans? Coming off an absolute beat down administered by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, one would think this Packers team was posed and focused to obliterate the wounded animal that is the Houston Texans organization.
The Packers looked dominant Sunday. The offense was clicking, the defense was getting stops, and besides a special teams blocked punt, the Packers did a great job of handling the Texans. It was 21-0 at halftime, and every time the Texans scored in the second half, the Packers answered. Davante Adams had a career day, and Jamaal Williams did a great job of making up for an injured Aaron Jones. After last week’s performance against Tampa, in one of the worst Aaron Rodgers performances ever, Rodgers played great. With a Russell Wilson three-interception game, Rodgers is back in the MVP conversation and really seemed unfazed by a piss poor performance in the previous week. And are we really surprised? This is what the all-time great quarterbacks do. The Mannings’, the Brady’s, and the Montana’s of the world have bad games. And the following week, they’re back to being great. Rodgers is an all-time great. Why would we expect any different?
Suffice to say, I’m not surprised by Aaron Rodgers terrific performance. One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was how well the secondary played down two starters. Raven Greene had a great game, and we didn’t hear Jarie Alexander’s name called very much which means he probably had a great day. Although pressure on the quarterback wasn’t great, the front seven did manage to hold Deshaun Watson to a modest game. Green Bay has a history of getting run all over by mobile quarterbacks, and it felt like Deshaun Watson wasn’t doing what he wanted, so that’s nice.
Studs of the game
Davante Adams: Adams had his career-high in receptions with a pair of touchdowns. There wasn’t a man in Houston that could guard Adams, and after a brief injury Adams seems he’s back on pace for a spectacular season.
Jamaal Williams: Jamaal Williams didn’t miss a beat yesterday with no Aaron Jones. When a star in the backfields out and the weight of the run game is on your shoulders that’s a big responsibility. Williams shined yesterday and further proved that this is a multidimensional backfield in the Green Bay offense.
Duds of the game
No one popped off the page to me this week as glaringly bad. Here’s a stat I don’t like though. The Packers were 7/12 on third down. Which is actually pretty good, but all of those third downs were converted by Davante Adams. Are the Packers too one dimensional on third down? I don’t think they are, but it did seem like I knew where the ball was going before it was snapped. If I’m picking up on where Rodgers is going with the ball on third down, then the opposing defensive coordinator definitely knows where it’s going. Some food for thought.
All in all, great week for the Packers. They have a divisional opponent next week in the Minnesota Vikings. That’s going to be a big game. One thing to note, the Packers have played 4 road games already, and they’re 3-1. They just got off of back to back road games, and won’t have any more of those for the remainder of the season.
