Mia Kalin: 2020 Pacific Coast Sectionals Junior Ladies Figure Skating

Mia Kalin won the silver medal for the Junior Ladies event at the Pacific Coast Sectional competition. She is only 11 years old and represents the St. Moritz Ice Skating Club. Her coach is Vadim Shebeco, and her choreographer is Evgenia Chernyshova. For her free skate, the music she chose to skate to is “The Crown, Hans Zimmer / Palladio, Escala.” She chose a strong piece of music for her specific skating. Her style is delicate and graceful, a softer piece with variations in the tempo would benefit her in future performances. She takes her time with her skating, and her skills are high level, so something softer would allow her to go with the beat of the music and take her time going into elements.

She starts her program with a few twizzles and steps that go into her triple flip. She lands this with ease and carries through her choreography into her next jump pass, being a triple lutz, triple toe combination. She does not have as much speed coming out of the lutz as anticipated, so she has to get more height out of the second jump in order to get the full rotation on the triple toe. Unfortunately, if full rotation does not occur, major points will be deducted from the jump pass, as then the element is considered “cheated.” Next, she includes a double axel, which received great height and was landed clean. Her first spin had stars transitioning into a flying camel. She did not have a lot of speed for her first few rotations in this position. However, after her change of position she was able to increase her speed.

Her triple loop came next, which seemed like she had a little bite at the end causing a little deduction in points. She leaned forward on this jump on the landing. Moreover, she goes into her triple lutz and although she lands it, she has to fight to save the jump. On any jump, it is important to maintain an upright air-position, that is over the right hip. Her arms during the last half rotation slowly migrated to the left side of her body. This caused her to fight to land the jump instead of stepping out of it. Her step sequence was creative and had a lot of power and speed in completing each required cluster to earn her levels. Mia then completes a triple flip, half loop, triple tow combination. She had a lot of speed going into both elements and the jump was successful. She also does a double axel, double toe combination that was completed with a little stutter on the landing of the double toe. Next, her combination spin pass had a lot of speed, and every position was held in order to receive her level. Her last spin is a layback combination that received a high level since she held every necessary position and had speed maintained throughout the spin.
