In a year that’s been everything but normal, the game of golf saw a different change to its biggest event. Normally in April surrounded by Azalea’s and lush greenery, there was Fall foliage this time around for The Master at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA.
Moved to November due to COVID-19, The Masters no doubt had a different look this year. With no patrons in attendance and the tournament being postponed several months, many wondered what golf’s most prestigious event would look like in 2020.
The Masters may have looked much different from a viewer’s perspective this year, but one thing seems to always stay the same at Augusta National. Elite golf from the world’s best.
After the first two rounds saw a jam-packed leaderboard featuring some of the game’s best, the weekend belonged to World No. 1 Dustin Johnson. The FedEx Cup champion claimed his second career major and first Green Jacket with a score of 20-under par, a Masters scoring record, running away with the tournament.
Heading into the third round, there was a log-jam at the top of the leaderboard. It featured some of the names best and promising up-and-comers but was headlined by the top-three players in the world, all tied for the lead at 9-under. Johnson was joined by World No. 2, Jon Rahm, and World No. 3, Justin Thomas, for the top spot. Abraham Ancer and Cameron Smith.
It had looked like the world was in store for a classic finish come Sunday afternoon for the Green Jacket. However, Johnson had much different ideas, running away with the illustrious title. It was a cool, calm, and collected weekend for Johnson, shooting a combined 11-under on Saturday and Sunday.
DJ’s dominance shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who follow the game. He’s very clearly been the best player in the world this year, proving it once again on the biggest stage. Johnson himself said prior to the tournament, he wished he had played more competitive golf in preparation for The Masters, but if you didn’t know, he said that you would’ve guessed he was in midseason-form.
His all-around game this weekend in Augusta was nothing short of master-class. Off-the-tee, approach, short game, and putting, you name it, and Johnson was executing.
Dustin Johnson has long been one of the game’s greater talents, but he’s taken his play to another level. He was known as just a bomber who can hit the ball a country-mile, but this year he has shown he can beat you with his approach and an exquisite short-game.
With his latest and biggest win of his career to date, Johnson has firmly mounted himself at the top of the game. The World No. 1 seems to continue to elevate his game, which is not a good sign for his competitors.
Golf fans waited months for their favorite event to be played. It may not have been as close as many wanted, thanks to Johnson’s dominant performance.
The good news for them, we only have to wait till April to watch Johnson defend his Green Jacket
