Nelly Korda continues to shine in her breakout 2021 season by adding an Olympic Gold Medal to her golf resume. The 23 year-old American is currently the number one ranked player in the world and has already won a major this year at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship back in June. She is the first female American to win Gold since golf returned to the Olympic Games in 2016. Korda’s Gold also secured a Gold Medal sweep for the Americans as Xander Schauffele won the men’s tournament.
Prior to the Olympics, Korda had won 6 career titles on the LPGA Tour. 3 of those titles came in 2021, and included the Women’s PGA Championship on June 27. Korda’s victory at the Women’s PGA Championship is her first win at a major in her career. She earned the world number one ranking following that win.
Heading into the Olympics, Nelly Korda was a huge favorite to win Gold as the number one player in the world. She posted a first round score of 67, followed by a 62 in the second round, and back-to-back scores of 69 in the third and fourth rounds for a winning score of 267. Her 17 under-par gave her a one stroke advantage over the Silver Medalist Mone Inami of Japan. She was able to celebrate her golden moment alongside her sister Jessica, who was her caddie, and is also a professional golfer. Jessica waited with open arms as Nelly came to her for a celebratory hug.
Nelly Korda’s victory came six days after fellow American Xander Schauffele won Gold in the men’s tournament. This completed the Gold Medal sweep for the Americans.
