The Carli Lloyd era of the U.S. Soccer Team came to an end October 26th when she played in her 316th and final match in a U.S. Soccer uniform against South Korea which the U.S. won 6-0. Lloyd did not score. As a farewell gesture, Lloyd announced prior to the game that she would be passing her jersey number 10 onto Portland Thorns star and U.S. teammate Lindsey Horan. Horan scored a goal in the 9th minute of the match against South Korea that gave the U.S. an early lead, which was a lead the U.S. kept as they piled on five more goals enroute to the 6-0 shutout victory. The 27 year-old, Horan has played in 106 matches and scored 24 goals since her 2013 debut for the U.S. Womens Soccer Team. She is considered one of the rising stars for the next generation of the U.S. Womens Soccer Team.
Horan made her debut for the U.S. Womens National team on March 8th, 2013 against China in the Algarve Cup. She did not score. After being left off of the 2015 World Cup roster, Horan was called back up to the National Team at the end of 2015 and she scored her first goal in a U.S. Soccer jersey on December 12th of that year in a match against Trinidad&Tobago. She scored her 2nd international goal in a match against Canada on February 21, 2016 during the 2016 Olympic qualifying tournament. She was a member of the U.S. Soccer Team that made the Olympics in 2016, but that squad ultimately lost to the eventual Silver Medalist Sweden in the quarterfinals. Lindsey Horan would make the U.S. roster for the 2019 World Cup where she would score her first two World Cup goals. Both goals came in the group stage. One against Thailand and the other against Sweden. The U.S. won both games enroute to their second consecutive World Cup title. It was Horan’s first World Cup appearance.
On January 31, 2020 Lindsey Horan recorded her first career hat-trick against Panama in a 2020 Olympic Qualifying Match. At the 2020 Olympics, Horan scored a goal in the 45th minute against New Zealand in a group stage match, which the U.S. won 6-1. The U.S. eventually earned the Bronze Medal in the 2020 Olympics. Including the four international friendlies that were a part of Carli Lloyd’s farewell tour, Horan has played in a total of 106 games for the U.S. Womens Soccer Team with 24 goals.
It’s unclear when Lindsey Horan will be sporting the number 10 on the back of her jersey, but it looks like she will be available for the two international friendlies against Australia on November 26th and November 30th. It’s possible that she will be wearing the new jersey for those games, but the change will likely occur sometime in 2022 when the U.S. shifts their focus on qualifying for the 2023 World Cup.
