For all the hype this game brought throughout the week, it was an absolute barnburner. All the big man studs on both of these teams couldn’t get anything going today. The game ends in a 0-0 draw, and Liverpool continues to have trouble finding the back of the net. Since their 7-0 win over Crystal Palace, they have scored a combined 5 goals; 4 of those goals came from a 4-1 win against Aston Villa, who was playing their U23 team due to their actual team having to quarantine.
The front three of Salah, Firmino, and Mane have to be more selfish when it comes to shooting. Obviously, I don’t know the game plan that Klopp puts in, but they need to change it up because nothing is working for the squad. When your team only has three shots on goal, and the shots don’t challenge the keeper, that isn’t a winning gameplan. One good thing to take from this game is that Liverpool controlled the ball for 67% of the match against the current league leaders. With the draw today, Liverpool sits three points back from Man United.
Look for the Reds to get back in scoring form Thursday when Burnley comes to town. This will be a good tune-up game before their Sunday rematch against Man United. However, this game is not a league game. With the Premier League declining to take two weeks off in the coming month for covid reasons, the schedule is nonstop for all these teams, plus you have the UEFA Champions League starting back up in February.
Liverpool should be looking in the transfer market for some scoring options off the bench. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t get a big name but a loan player from a smaller club. There’s a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months with the race to be crowned champions of England heating up.
