After a year-and-a-half away, the fans were back at Anfield for a big Champions League night on Wednesday and were heard throughout the city. The fans were in harmony singing You’ll Never Walk Alone and went right into Allez, Allez, Allez. Before the first whistle blew, the tone had been set for the night.
Liverpool’s gaffer, Jurgen Klopp, made some surprising decisions when the lineups came out, but that didn’t stop the team from attacking from the get-go. Trent Alexander-Arnold took the ball from the touchline and fired a shot on goal in the ninth minute of the game, which deflected off an AC Milan defender and ended up in the back of the night, later scored as an own goal. Five minutes later, a handball in the box was called on Milan, but their keeper, Maignan, was up for the task of stopping Salah to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Before going into halftime, Liverpool and their supporters were stunned. Within a two-minute span, AC Milan, who had all but five touches in their attacking end of the field scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead going into half.
Liverpool needed to make a comeback against AC Milan in the Champions League. Where have I heard that before? Oh yes, in Istanbul when they were down 3-0 at half.
Liverpool couldn’t have asked for a better start for the second half. Salah took the chip from Origi to score a wonderful goal just three minutes into the second. Needing three points in game one of the computation sounds a little ridiculous but when you are in the group of death every point matters, ask Manchester United fans. Liverpool was awarded one of their fifteen corners in the 69th minute. Alexander-Arnold had a short corner kick poorly cleared by the AC Milan defenders and the captain Jordan Henderson volleyed the ball from the top of the box and put it in the onion bag to take a 3-2 lead.
Anfield was alive and well after that beautiful goal by the skipper. They went on to win the game by that final and snatched three points from Milan.
Champions League football back at Anfield with a full crowd, there is nothing better than the sound of the reds faithful. Liverpool looks to keep their unbeaten season alive this Saturday as heavy favorites in a home match against Crystal Palace.
