This Is Anfield: Man City vs. Liverpool Recap

On Sunday morning Manchester City and Liverpool faced off in a much anticipated match.  In the first half of the game it was Liverpool on their heels and Man City was attacking and keeping pressure on the defense.  Liverpool’s keeper, Alisson, kept them in the game with a huge save on Foden who was in all alone.  Man City dominated possession, keeping the ball for 54% of the match, had 12 shots (3 on goal), and for most of the game controlled the pace of play.

Mo Salah decided to take the game into his own hands and put on a masterful display of football.  He set up Sadio Mane in the 59th minute to take a 1-0 lead.  The play started in Liverpool’s defensive zone and Salah chipped the ball over the defender, who had a poor read on the ball, and ran down the field until passing it off to Mane who calmly took the pass into the box and scored.  The lead disappeared ten minutes later when Foden got one past Alisson to his far post.  Salah was going to do anything to try and gain three points from this game.

In the 76th minute he took a pass from midfielder Curtis Jones and during the split second he had possession of the ball it looked as though Salah was trapped being surrounded by three Man City defenders.  Well, there is a reason Mo Salah is regarded as one of the best players in the world.  He beat all three defenders, took on another one in the box, made him look foolish, and deposited the ball into the back of the onion bag to take a 2-1 lead.  It is a goal that will be shown for years to come, an absolutely magnificent display of skill.  Unfortunately for Liverpool supporters De Bruyne scored the game tying goal in the 81st minute.

It is hard to predict outcomes of games however, Liverpool had James Milner playing right back for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.  I believe if TAA is out there Foden doesn’t score their first goal.  Milner looked lost out there and hopefully Liverpool have an answer for the position.  The Premier League is on their international break and games will resume Saturday October 16th.  Liverpool sits one point back of first place going into the break.
