World Cup Winner Christen Press Playing For Manchester United Womens Team

One positive constant to 2020 was the advancement of the role of women in society. From sports athletes and executives to newly elected members of Congress, there has been no better year than 2020, which has been dubbed the year of the woman. It’s also been a transformative year for American soccer player Christen Press as she took her talent overseas to play for the Manchester United Women’s Team.

Press arrived at Manchester United with an already impressive career at the college and professional level. While playing for Stanford, Press became the all-time goal scorer for the Cardinal with 71 goals and set multiple single-season records as well. Press’s success carried over to her professional career, where she is most prominently known for her success with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Since her 2013 debut with the U.S. team, Press has played in 139 games, scored 58 goals, and won the World Cup in 2015 and again in 2019. Press was supposed to represent the U.S. at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo prior to the games being postponed. Press also opted out of the NWSL Challenge Cup that took place in Salt Lake City.

Christen Press, along with fellow U.S. soccer teammate Tobin Heath, signed a one year contract with Manchester United on September 9th. Press has played in five games so far and scored one goal.

Christen Press and Tobin Heath’s presence in England is a sign that women’s soccer, which has been dominated by the U.S. for a long time, is now accelerating in popularity in other parts of the world. The future is bright for both players.
