Struggling Mets Move On From Hitting Coaches

Mets Fire Hitting Coach Chili Davis

Who had Kevin Pillar having more home runs than Francisco Lindor for the Mets on May 3rd? If that isn’t a sign of the struggling Mets, then what is? Twenty-three games into the MLB season the Mets have struggled offensively, particularly with runners in scoring position. The slow start resulted in the franchise taking action on Monday, firing hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater.

Despite their slow start The Mets had finally built some offensive momentum scoring 18 runs in their last three games. Making this move even more unexpected.

Mets acting General Manager Zach Scott made clear that there is more to this decision than a slow start.

“This isn’t about recent results. This is about the process behind the scenes, it’s too early to be overreacting to small samples of results.” Scott Said “We just felt like the players needed a different level of support and maybe some different skills brought into the mix.”

Hugh Quattlebaum the Mets Minor league director of hitting development will become the new hitting coach. As well as director of player development Kevin Howard takes over as assistant hitting coach. Both Quattlebaum and Howard were appointed for the remainder of the season, and future plans will be reevaluated.

Both Davis and Slater are well respected in Major League Baseball and will likely find themselves working with other teams.

As for the struggling Mets, Scott confirmed that Mets team president Sandy Alderson was in agreement. As well as that Luis Rojas’ job as first year manager is safe.
