A Baker Mayfield Trade for Aaron Rodgers: Browns Fans Aren’t Having It

ESPN’s Adam Schefter released reports last Thursday stating that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has no desire to return with his current team, causing a whirl of media frenzy. If Rodgers were to leave, where would be his next destination? One suggestion didn’t seem to be taken well by Cleveland fans. Browns nation has since taken to social media to air out their grievances stating they accept one QB and one QB only, Baker Mayfield.

After coming off as the hosts of a successful 2021 NFL Draft Weekend, Browns fans were feeling pretty good. Draft picks were looking good. They got a steal out of cornerback Greg Newsome II. They were also able to add extra athleticism to the defense with linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. The Browns even boosted their offense with the quickness found in wide receiver Anthony Schwartz.

Tables would quickly turn, however, after ESPN released a list of seven potential landing pads for Aaron Rodgers. When Cleveland was included in the lineup, Browns nation took it personal as “Baker” made it to Twitter’s ‘Trending’ class on Wednesday.

In his three seasons in Cleveland, Mayfield has already left quite an impression on Browns fans that no QB, not even the 2020 NFL MVP can top.

One Twitter user said, “Aaron Rodgers wasn’t the one embracing Cleveland at their worst. Aaron Rodgers wasn’t the one who ended the 19-year QB search. Aaron Rodgers wasn’t the one who cried when the Browns broke an 18-year playoff drought because he understood what it meant. Baker Mayfield was.”

Mayfield would lead the Browns to their first playoff scoring since 2003 in last season’s AFC Wild Card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, additionally marking the Browns first playoff win since 1994!

This wasn’t the QB’s first big win for the franchise either. In 2018, Mayfield would give the Browns new life after the franchise had gone 635 days without a win, shattering a 19-game winless streak in just his first NFL appearance!

Browns fans got exactly what they wanted. As Cleveland took Mayfield first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, the potential was apparent.

As for the Browns nation, they seem to have seen all they need to see to put a stamp on the young QB.

Mayfield would finish the 2020-2021 season with a 26-8 TD-to-INT ratio, his cleanest and most efficient season yet.

In January, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapport reported that Mayfield answers all questions for the Browns as an organization as they believe Mayfield to be their franchise quarterback.

The Dawgs seems to echo this sentiment as one tweet said, “Aaron Rodgers is amazing and a future Hall of Famer… but Baker Mayfield was put on earth to quarterback the Cleveland Browns!”

One thing for sure, Browns nation has made it abundantly clear that they want no part of the reigning league MVP if it comes at the cost of losing #6.
