The Players Championship Preview and Prediction

The Players Championship kicks off this Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida, and for those that do not know, this is the biggest non-major in golf. Played at the iconic TPC Sawgrass which was designed by Pete Dye, this event attracts nearly all of the top players in golf every year. The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings will all be participating, with Justin Thomas looking to defend his 2021 victory at Sawgrass. After this past tournament in which Scottie Scheffler won with a score of -5 at Bay Hill, the players will be happy to go to a less difficult course, although Sawgrass still has its challenges. With such a deep field, there will be high-quality players to be found at great prices, so let’s take a look at a few of the guys with the best value this week.

With so many of the best in the world in attendance, it may not seem like a great idea to pick the player with the second highest odds in the field. But, with Collin Morikawa, it is almost always a safe bet that he will be in contention. In his last three events on the PGA Tour dating back to December, the two-time major champion has a T-2 and two T-5. As the first major of the year approaches in Augusta next month, Morikawa is rounding into form and you can always count on the young stud to come through in big events. If you want to wager on someone that you can be very confident will be in contention on the weekend, look no further than Collin Morikawa.

Priced below Matthew Fitzpatrick and near Billy Horschel and Sungjae Im, there appears to be great value on the Australian at Sawgrass this week. With four career PGA Tour wins including one already this season, Smith seems to be undervalued at a course where the cream usually rises the top. The extraordinarily talented Smith is worth a shot at such a price, no matter the stiff competition he faces in Jacksonville.

The Longshot: Ryan Palmer (+17000)

Who doesn’t love taking a chance on a guy that has four career victories to his name at such long odds? Palmer does not have the best course history at Sawgrass, but with two of his wins coming at Florida courses, the PGA Tour veteran is worth a shot when he is priced with players that have much less proven track records.

The last few tournaments have been a struggle, but this is the biggest tournament of 2022, so let’s hope we can get back on track here at an iconic golf course.
