Seattle Storm delivers another powerful performance to take a 2-0 lead over the Las Vegas Aces in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. Seattle finished 104-91 over the number one seed in Sunday’s matchup. Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird gave yet another electrifying performance to lead their team to victory over the Aces for their second straight win.
As the first whistle blew, both teams started off with hot scoring streaks, both shooting 70%, keeping the game neck and neck for maybe the first 5 minutes of the game. Yet, Seattle was still out to make a point since losing to the Aces twice in the regular season.
Breanna Stewart
Breanna Stewart, delivering yet another worthy finals MVP performance, finished with 22 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, and she went 7-13 in field goal range and 5-8 from 3-point range.
Stewart was dominant from tip-off to the final whistle, giving her team a consistent and notable performance. Sue Bird, coming off her recording-breaking game one performance, made a lot more buckets for her team on Sunday and still managed to deliver assist after assist.
Sue Bird
Bird finished with 16 points and 10 assists, going 6-9 from field goal and 4-7 from the 3-point range. Nonetheless, it wasn’t just a Breanna and Sue Show, since 4 of Seattle’s starting 5 finished with double figures. Seattle Storm managed to set a finals record in assists, producing a resounding 33 assists as a team.
Game 2
Even though the Aces were able to close a three-point lead in the second quarter, they struggled throughout most of the game. They had as much as 8 turnovers by the beginning of the second quarter, which allowed Seattle’s transition offense to gain a significant lead over them. While Aces’ top performers managed to deliver, Aces struggled on the 3-point line while Storm dominated. The Aces went 8-19 from 3-point, whereas Storm went 12-26. The Aces’ reigning MVP, A’ja Wilson, finished with 20 points, 1 assist and 6 rebounds, going 8-17 from field goal range but 0-0 from 3-point. While the Aces missed their 6th Woman of the Year, Dearica Hamby, their bench still had some depth in Emma Cannon, who finished with 17 points, going 8-10 from field goal range.
Despite being down 2-0, the Aces still have an opportunity to salvage the series if they could defend Seattle on the 3-point line and get some more 3s themselves, and make some more trips to the line since they only went 5-5 on free throws. Sue Bird, showing that 17 seasons are not enough to slow her down, along with Breanna Stewart have shown that they are ready to keep producing championship level performances, but the Aces have also shown resilience and determination in their performances, which should make another exhilarating finals game, Tuesday at 10 pm.
